HEPA Air Scrubbing for Mold, Dust & Odors in Metro Detroit

Mold doesn't stay where you find it. Disturbed spores drift through the air and settle in new places. Our HEPA air scrubbers capture them before they spread, so the cleanup protects the rest of your home or business.

What Is a HEPA Air Scrubber?

A HEPA air scrubber is a portable machine that pulls in room air, forces it through a series of filters, and sends clean air back out. The key filter is a true HEPA filter, which is rated to capture 99.97% of airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns. Mold spores, dust, and most allergens are larger than that, so they get trapped in the filter instead of circulating through your space.

Most professional units also use a pre-filter to catch large debris and, in some cases, a carbon filter to help with odors.

Why Air Scrubbing Matters During Mold Remediation

Scrubbing, wiping, and removing moldy materials stirs up spores. Without air control, those spores can travel through the building and settle on clean surfaces, in other rooms, and in ductwork. Running HEPA air scrubbers during the work helps keep the problem from spreading.

  • Captures airborne spores released while mold is being treated and removed.
  • Helps prevent cross-contamination of rooms that were clean when we started.
  • Supports containment. When we seal off a work area, a scrubber can exhaust filtered air and keep the area under negative pressure, so air flows into the work zone instead of out of it.
  • Reduces dust and debris from demolition and cleanup.
  • Helps with lingering odors when paired with carbon filtration and removal of the source.

When You May Need Air Scrubbing

Active mold remediation

Any job where mold-affected materials are being cleaned, cut out, or removed.

After water damage

Floods, leaks, and backups can leave spores and dust in the air once drying and demolition begin.

After fire or smoke damage

Fine soot and smoke particles linger long after the fire is out.

Musty basements & closets

A persistent damp smell is often a sign of mold growing out of sight.

Renovation & demolition dust

Opening up old walls and ceilings can release decades of dust and hidden mold.

Occupied homes & businesses

When people live or work nearby, controlling the air helps protect them during the work.

How Our Air Scrubbing Works

  1. Assess the space. We look at the size of the area, the extent of the mold, and how air moves through the building.
  2. Set up containment. Where needed, we seal off the work area so spores stay put.
  3. Place the scrubbers. Units are positioned and, when appropriate, vented to create negative pressure in the work zone.
  4. Run during the work. Scrubbers stay on while we treat, remove, and haul away affected materials.
  5. Keep running after cleanup. We continue filtering to capture what's left in the air before the area is reopened.

An Air Scrubber Is Not a Mold Cure

This is worth saying plainly. An air scrubber cleans the air. It does not remove mold that is growing on walls, wood, or drywall, and it does not fix the moisture that let the mold grow. If the source is still there, the mold will come back.

That's why we use air scrubbing as part of a complete remediation: find the mold, treat and remove it, address the moisture problem, and filter the air throughout. If you've been told a portable air purifier alone will solve your mold problem, call us for a second opinion.

Air Scrubbing FAQs

Is an air scrubber the same as an air purifier?

They work on the same idea, but professional air scrubbers move far more air and are built for job-site conditions. Household air purifiers are made for small rooms and light, everyday use, not for the heavy spore and dust load during remediation.

How long will the air scrubber run?

It depends on the size of the space and the scope of the work. Scrubbers typically run for the duration of the remediation and often for a period after. We'll explain the plan in your written estimate.

Will the air scrubber get rid of the mold smell?

It can help, especially with carbon filtration, but odors usually come from the source. Removing the mold and moisture is what actually solves it. See our odor removal service.

Do I need to leave my home while it's running?

That depends on the size and location of the job. We'll tell you what to expect before work begins. If anyone in your home has health concerns, talk with your doctor about whether to stay elsewhere during remediation.

Can you just rent me an air scrubber?

Please call us to talk it over. Air scrubbing works best as part of a full remediation, and running a unit without dealing with the source can give a false sense of security.

How much does air scrubbing cost?

Cost depends on the size of the area, how many units are needed, and how long they run. Air scrubbing is usually included in the estimate for a remediation job. We provide free estimates, and we'll explain every line before you commit.
